Bo Thai Restaurant, Crows Nest

I am excited to visit Bo Thai restaurant at Crow Nest for dinner on a weeknight, having heard the owner is also part of the super successful Home Thai in Chinatown.

Melle and Dazz check out Bo Thai, a clean and contemporary restaurant. The staff are genuinely friendly, and appeared popular with the locals for take-away.

Thai cuisine in Sydney tends to be a predictable range of same-same Thai curries and noodle dishes, though we were quite surprised at the quality of the Bo Thai staples as well as the unique range of signature dishes. The Satay Chicken skewers (top photo, $10 for 4) really hit the spot as a starter. They were perfectly cooked, with a delicious house-made peanut satay sauce. We tried the pork skewers as well though preferred these.

One of Bo Thai’s signature dishes is their Tempura Morning Glory ($18). The water spinach was lightly battered and not too oily, with freshly cooked prawns and plump fish roe which provided a refreshing pop.

Another Bo Thai signature dish is Larb Lamb cutlets (above $17 for 2). Quite an unusual Thai dish, the lamb cutlets were a very generous size, and coated in the chef’s secret spicy crumbed coating with a lime tang. Super crunchy on the outside, and cooked perfectly with a blush of pink on the inside.

The Gai Yang Chicken (above, $12) was tender and juicy, with golden brown crispy skin that was marinated well without being too salty. We enjoyed that the sauce was on the side, and were able to pour it on top for that glistening mouth-watering finish.

We also noticed the $10 lunch deals on the wall and would be keen to go back and give that a try.

Highlights: The quality of the ingredients at Bo Thai, particularly their seafood, is well and truly a cut above your usual Thai meal, though also a bit pricier, thus best enjoyed as a nice night out.
The Morning Glory tempura water spinach and the tender Gai Yang chicken were particularly standout dishes.
Suggested Improvements: Perhaps a set 2 or 3 course menu might be a nice way to showcase some of Bo Thai’s unique dishes, and the addition of more traditional Thai drinks.
