Some of the best Indian food is in Harris Park and Billu's has a stellar reputation for delicious, authentic Indian food. More recently, Spiced By Billus has opened up in Barangaroo. In conjunction with the Australian Good Food Guide, I stopped by for a leisurely lunch on the weekend.
I cosy up to the heater and immediately order a wine to warm me up on this cold day. Matt orders an Indian beer Haywards 5000 which would perfectly match some of the curries.
It's a gorgeous day and the blue skies and the blue water make for a wonderful view. Matt and I look at the extensive Spiced by Billus menu which has a range of authentic Indian dishes as well as modern fusion dishes.
Matt and I share the Bhel Puri ($8.90) which is a traditional street food which is made of puffed rice, nuts, tomato in a tangy but spicy tamarind sauce. I really like this dish as it's light, crunchy and incredibly tasty. The tomatoes make for a refreshing change to the spicy tangy flavours.
Matt suggests we order the Chicken Tikka Masala ($24.90) which is a chicken thigh fillet cooked in a clay oven tossed with capsicum, diced onion, tomato, shallot and spices. It's quite an earthly dish with a myriad of flavours. This curry is best soaked up in some naan bread. Matt really enjoys this curry.
My favourite dish is the Mango Chicken ($24.90) which is quite a sweet mango based curry with chicken thigh with the chef's secret spices. You'd think that a sweet curry would taste odd but I really like the unique flavour, especially in contrast to the spices in the chicken tikka masala. It's mildly sweet so you can still enjoy it with the naan bread.
Matt insists on trying the sweet naan ($5.90). This sweet naan has pink soft filling. This is very unique and I haven't tried this naan bread before. I'm enjoying the unique and modern twists to the dish.
For dessert, Matt and I share the honey and pistachio kulfi ($7.90) which is an Indian milky ice cream. It's not intended to be as creamy as western ice cream but has a more frozen and spiced flavour.
