Satellite Cafe, Newtown


Satellite Cafe is a unique cafe in Newtown. It's sister restaurant District in Marrickville also has character. I drop by on a lazy Sunday morning for brunch.

Satellite is a cosy little restaurant however if you have a look around, it's like a mini art museum with skulls (not real ones), art work on the walls/roof as well as random pieces like this mannequin body below.



The painting above is probably my favourite as I love the facial expression. Have a good look around at all the art work and don't forget to look up as well as there's artwork on the roof. There's high energy music playing in the background as I look at the menu. This may not be your kind of cafe if you want quiet music in the background.








We start off with some drinks. Matt goes for his Hot Chocolate. As it's a warm day, I order a Strawberry, lemon and pineapple frappe ($7) which was really refreshing and well balanced between the tangy lemon flavours and the usual sweet strawberry flavours. There's a friendly flamingo in my drink as well as a turkey. The drink is served up in a skull glass which is a nice novelty.




As it's brunch time, Matt and I decide to get a lunch item as well as a breakfast dish. We order the Yohji Soba Salad ($18) with strawberries, edamame, haloumi, pickled ginger, red pepper, nori, roast cashews,  sugarsnaps, carrot, coriander, sesame and tamari and lime oil dressing.  This is an incredibly delicious salad that is very enjoyable to eat from a textural and flavour perspective. I like the sweetness from the strawberries with the savoury noodles, the crunch from the sugarsnaps and cashews. It all sounds random but it simply just works.




For a light breakfast, there's the Mermaid Googs ($17) which is two fried eggs on a piece of sourdough, smoked ocean trout, wasabi oil, sumac yoghurt and caperberries. I really like the wasabi oil with the egg, it was hot but was not epic. The unique part of the dish is the sumac yoghurt which is quite tangy. I stay away from the tangy yoghurt and stick to the wasabi oil. I also try my first caperberry. I've never eaten caperberries before and found it to be quite foreign. It's texturally like an olive on the outside and it's like a caper on the inside, quite salty.




The signature is the French Hot Mess ($17) which is french toast, maple butter strawberries, pomegranate, meringue, pistachio and Turkish ice cream. The dish is beautiful as it's served on our table. This dish has a middle eastern feel to it, in particular the flavour combination of the pistachio  and the strawberries with the turkish ice cream. This is definitely one for those who have a sweet tooth.




Summary: So why not stop by and check out the art and enjoy some brunch. The art is not for everyone so perhaps if you are conversative, you might not enjoy the atmosphere as much. My favourite is the Yohji Soba salad.
